Space is the major frontier for the installation artist. It’s a fourth dimension – a physical entity of form and shape that the artist orchestrates to create a visual echo, a response to an idea.

Installations allow me to create works that look at particular spaces and bring into them elements and ideas that form metaphors of life as I see it.

The world and the artist move along parallel but separate roadways. The artist collects fragments of the real world and uses these to reflect ideas about the world. These ideas are road signs only, and need to be read in the context of the whole vision.

Unlike an exhibition, the installation project allows me to control the space and transform it. In these ‘spaces’ I create a new reality existing for a brief moment in time within the confines of a room. In some ways it’s playing at God within the boundaries of a finite kingdom.

As in my Level 4 project, the concept was to bring a virus (represented by gorse) into a room and allow it to quietly spread. In my world, the virus carries no evil; the virus is doing only what is natural in order to survive.

As in most installation projects, there are more questions raised than answers are provided.
